“I had seen a picture of the fixture and was really inspired by it,” says Andron, who was working for the first time on the NHI Dream Home project. “I designed the whole room to work around that central piece.” The entire room is accented with a unique chocolate wall treatment handcrafted by a Raleigh couple, Michelle and Davide Aguiar. The plain walls were transformed with a four-layer process that includes a veneer plaster that is hand trawled and then burnished. The technique gives the walls a marble-like effect that creates an elegant setting. The entire process, which included a stone-like treatment on the trey ceiling, took about two weeks to complete, says Andron. It is a perfect match with the tile floor accented with a mosaic border. “I had seen Michelle’s and Davide’s work on other walls and knew it was amazing,” Andron says. “I love how the walls look in the dining room.”
A dark sideboard, also by Broyhill, accents the only major
wall in the room. A custom concrete top is a fitting surprise on the top
of the sideboard. Designed and made by FormWorks Concrete, the top is
accented with small glass tiles in a flowing river pattern. Lamps on each Another unique feature of the dining room is an arrangement of four live boxwood squares that form a wreath above the sideboard. Each measures about 24 inches and creates an unique focal point instead of a more traditional mirror or painting.
Rounding out the room is an entire wall featuring the unique chocolate treatment with numerous panels. Several of the panels are open with glass insets, highlighting a cabinet and storage area for flatware, table linens and other items. The elevator also is discretely placed along this wall, and only the call button gives away its location. Andron began her studies in psychology at Duke University. A few years and a short career later she left her job in organization development and finance and headed back to school to study interior design. Upon graduating from Meredith College with an interior design degree in 2000, she formed Realm Design Studio and began to follow her passion for interior design.
“I take a lot of my inspirations from nature in my work,”
Andron says. “I was very pleased with the dining room and excited about
the whole outcome.”
