And given the growing up that this 12-year-old has had to do in the past year and a half, she’s earned the cosmopolitan chic that this room reflects—as well as its spirit of fun. Raleigh middle-schooler, Sherilyn Adams was just 11 years old when, early in 2003, she complained of a sore neck. A month later, when the pain persisted, and she had developed a rash on her legs, along with a low-grade fever, Laura Adams, Sherilyn’s mother, took her back to the doctor. Her pediatrician sent her straight over to Duke. “Within the hour, in the ER, she was diagnosed with leukemia,” says Laura, specifically acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). From February until August of 2003, she spent 32 of every 40 days undergoing aggressive treatment for her cancer. She is a budding artist and especially loves to draw. She is a swimmer and a skier and goes to the beach whenever she can. The sunny bedroom suite inspired by Sherilyn is a smart mix of dark finished woods and soft silks in muted pastels. The walls are a deep terra-cotta color, with crisp white trim. No frilly little girl’s room, the furniture here is big and bold—an espresso finish queen-sized bed with suede accents, an oversized, nearly black armoire angled in one corner, and an equally dark secretary on one wall with a funky black lacquered floor lamp beside it.
A sort of modern Moulin Rouge look is carried throughout the room with stacks of vintage-looking patterned ladies’ hat and shoe boxes and espresso framed prints, in cranberry tints, of stylized ladies’ hats and dancing girls. Splashes of cranberry are scattered throughout the room in a leather-like album, magazine box and wastebasket. The same sophisticated flare, with just a touch of girlish humor is carried out in the adjoining bathroom. Ultra-plush yellow and red towels, tied with silky tassels, gold chenille bath mats and silver accessories provide polished elegance. But colorful prints of flip-flops and feather-trimmed toiletries keep it all from getting too serious.
On the night of the black-tie gala, celebrating the
completion of the NHI Dream Home, Sherilyn was treated to a day of
glamour. Her hair was styled in a chic updo. Her makeup was professionally
applied by a makeup artist with the “oh-so-hot with the younger crowd”
tarte cosmetics. She wore a gown and jewelry specially designed just for
her. On that glitzy evening, Sherilyn, with her family and friends
surrounding her, got to be a chic glamour girl. But we’ll bet she couldn’t
wait to take her shoes off and have a good giggle about it all. ▪
