The teenage bedroom suite, designed by Theresa Ferguson of TDesign Interiors in Cary, is a versatile space that adapts easily to either of its dual purposes.

Ferguson set the tone for the attractive and functional suite by selecting the mossy green bed linens by Legacy as the inspiration for the room’s décor. “I saw the bedding at the furniture market this past spring,” Ferguson says, “and I thought the color would be a wonderful starting point for the room.”

The green spread is complemented by the colorful accents of the striped pillows and bedskirt. The black ultrasuede headboard, provided by the Great Couch Company in Raleigh, sets off the bed linens with dramatic flair. On either side of the bed, a pair of contemporary lamps stand sentinel on cherry bedside tables made by Vermont Precision Woodworks.

A matching chest and mirror in cherry enhanced by black trim complete the subtly modern look. A large moss green glass lamp with a bottle green shade carries out the color scheme and further anchors the room. A few steps up from the sleeping area, one enters the elevated platform that serves as a teen’s study. “I wanted to create a sense of fun in the loft area,” Ferguson says, “a kind of space where you would want to hang out with friends.” To achieve that goal, she consulted with her nephews to get ideas. “I needed to select furnishings that would be appropriate for a teenage boy, yet still be versatile enough for guests,” she says. “I had in mind creating a room for a teenager who would soon be going off to college.” The simple contemporary desk of wood with black trim is accompanied by a wood and steel chair. A black study lamp and desk accessories add extra function and appeal.

The vivid graphic design of the artwork adjacent to the desk adds a colorful note to the study space. “It was a find at IKEA in Washington, DC,” Ferguson says. “I thought it was perfect for the room, but it was the only one in stock, so I had them take it off the wall for me to use!”

A black shelf accented by natural baskets provides storage for the study space, and an indoor standing fountain provides a restful water feature for the room. “It’s definitely something different,” Ferguson admits, “but I thought it was a unique and fun piece for a teenage room.”

The bathroom’s neutral palette is enlivened by towels in shades of black, blue and lime green, picking up the colors of the bedding. A mossy green silk window treatment further carries out the color scheme, while a trio of colorful leaf prints adorn the bathroom walls. Brushed chrome bathroom fixtures echo the brushed steel of the bedroom’s ceiling fan, and give another
contemporary touch to the suite of rooms. Ferguson enjoyed the opportunity to decorate a room in the NHI Dream Home. “It’s a wonderful cause,” she says, “and I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of decorating this space!”
