Dentists Combine Beauty and Technology

Cutting edge materials and technology have allowed cosmetic dentists to work minor miracles on outward appearances. Those same innovations have increased their ability to deal with serious dental problems, while making the dental experience far more convenient and less painful.

Whole and Healthy Smiles
According to Dr. Fletcher Brannigann,ADDS., dentists are now able to create a perfect smile with "instant orthodontics," using veneers and crowns, while implants replace lost teeth without awkward bridges or dentures. In the past, the only cure for a missing tooth was an awkward bridge, which was not always applicable. If multiple teeth were damaged or lost, patients-regardless of age-were saddled with cumbersome dentures. Now dentists use implants followed by crowns to replace missing teeth. "Made of titanium, implants become an integral part of the mouth and last for decades," explains Dr. SuzanneRif kinn,ADDS. Dentists are even using panoramic machines that take digitalpxx-rays to identify any defects in the teeth and jaw in preparation for procedures. It's entirely safe, emitting only about 10 percent of the radiation of traditional X-rays.

High Tech Dental Care
There are different ways to design a restoration and the amount of tooth remaining dictates the type. It's preferable to save as much of the natural tooth as possible. This is precisely what today's high-tech tools allow. New materials, computerized milling units, and advanced lasers help preserve the tooth and replace only the diseased portion.

Dentists are currently embracing a concept called, "minimally-invasive dentistry." Lasers, like the new WaterlaseMD™, provide dentists with the precision needed to work on much smaller areas on the teeth. Fillings done with lasers are much smaller because old school, silver/mercury fillings had a minimum size requirement. As a result, even for a small cavity, dentists had to drill a large hole in the tooth. "This laser is far more fine tuned; I can use just enough power to do precisely what is needed," he says.
