Do you cringe at the very thought of climbing into a dentist's chair? It's that very mindset that Dr. Fletcher Jernigan wants to dispel with his dental care. "We go out of our way to make the experience as pleasant and completely pain free as possible," he says. "We empathize with our patients and want to provide a relaxed setting where we can establish a trusting relationship."

That experience begins as soon as a patient walks in the door of his convenient location. The large aquarium and seaside décor are welcoming and soothing. Friendly greetings by the staff and the composed, kind demeanor of Dr. Jernigan further enhance the pleasant atmosphere of this professional office. It was a study at Vanderbilt University that piqued Dr. Jernigan's interest and inspired him to go to dental school. His psychology professor had conducted a study on the effects of a smile. The results, though not surprising, showed unequivocally that people feel better when they smile. The reasons are simple. "When smiling we use all our facial muscles, releasing endorphins that lift the spirits. And it feels even better when recipients smile back," he adds.

More than 25 years later Dr. Jernigan still enjoys helping people smile. He offers full service dentistry from simple fillings to implants, crowns, orthodontics and more. Through the years, however, he's performed an increasing amount of cosmetic dentistry, improving the appearance of smiles as well as managing overall dental health.

New procedures and state-of-the-art technology have revolutionized dentistry. "When whitening became popular 20 years ago, it was a long, tedious process," he says. "Now laser lights that activate bleaching agents do the job in one sitting, the results lasting two to five years." Veneers and crowns correct flaws without orthodontics and implants replace lost teeth without awkward bridges or dentures.

Braces, too, are "new age." Invisalign, a clear plastic device similar to a retainer, straightens teeth and corrects overbites and spacing. Because it stops at the gum line and doesn't extend onto the roof of the mouth, the device is also far more comfortable than metal braces.

"No matter the whitening, straightening or bonding, the best thing people can do for their teeth is to practice good dental hygiene and see their dentist on a regular basis," says Dr. Jernigan. "You need sound, stable teeth to maintain that winning smile and overall good health.
