BUCKHEAD PLASTIC SURGERY

Alan Larson, MD
5335 Roswell Rd., NE
Atlanta, GA 30342

As a young man with Olympic dreams, Dr. Alan Larsen of Buckhead Plastic Surgery competed in the giant slalom. He gave up the sport to go to college, then returned to the international slopes to compete in the United States, Canada and Europe. Eventually, college won out, followed by medical school and a specialty in plastic surgery. For his patients, that's a very good thing. He dedicates the same passion once reserved for his sport to them.

Known as one of Atlanta's top plastic surgeons, Larsen is double board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has pioneered a wide range of procedures, particularly for patients who have either lost massive amounts of weight or are looking to help jumpstart their weight loss goals. Because he's nationally recognized as an expert in the beltlipectomy or body lift, he performs the procedure at least three to four times a week and has patients flying in from as far away as London, England. In addition, he developed the thoracobrachiomastopexy, a single surgical procedure that includes tightening of the upper arms, a lateral chest lift and breast lift - all with the least amount of hidden incisions. "Patients are amazed and thrilled with the outcome," he says.

"Plastic surgery is all about attention to detail," states Larsen. A leader in the field of blepharoplasty (eye surgery), he also pioneered a method that preserves the natural tissues (bulging fat). Early on, it went against traditional concepts and takes about 45 minutes longer than traditional eye surgery but he felt the outcome was well worth it. So does a recent patient of his, whose blockbuster film recently premiered here in Atlanta. "The operation has to be extremely precise," he says. "Retaining the tissue leads to a more youthful appearance. Removing it makes the eyes look hollow and older."

To get the best results and ensure that the patient understands the benefits and risks, Larsen spends a great deal of time upfront discussing the patients expectations. "Not everything is possible, and I don't have a problem saying, 'I can't or won't do that,'" said Larsen.

One of the results of upper lid surgery concerns the brow line which lowers slightly as a result. "To offset this, I generally recommend a brow lift along with the eye surgery to create a happier, more natural look," Larsen says. In older patients, he also recommends doing the upper and lower lids at the same time. "You have to preserve the symmetry between the upper and lower lids and the brows," he added. "The brow lift is a very important component."

Larsen also recommends a tandem procedure with a face lift - lip augmentation. But instead of using injections with filler products, he treats patients with fat grafting. During the face lift, he removes a layer of tissue to tighten the under layers and muscles. Then, using the SMAZ technique (superficial musculoaponeurotic or deep muscular tissue), he inserts this layer through small hidden incisions in the corner of the mouth. "The tissue is ideally suited to augment the lips with a great degree of precision," he added. "The best part is it stays in place and is permanent," he says. "It adds greatly to the overall appearance of the face lift."
