  Trade organizations are a great place to start research for any home construction or improvement project. Here are some of the most   well-known organizations and what you can expect from each.

Trade Value Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties
The Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties (MBA), founded in 1909, takes an active role in all facets of home construction in the Puget Sound region. Members of this professional organization are dedicated to providing a wide range of housing choices and, thanks to its active approach to the region's housing needs, the group has grown to become the second-largest local homebuilders association in the United States.

The American Institute of Architects
Established in 1857, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) now counts more than 74,000 licensed architects, emerging professionals and allied partners among its members. They adhere to a strict code of ethics and professional conduct, assuring clients that they will abide by the highest standards of their professional practice.

American Society of Interior Designers
Professionals that make up the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) include not only designers but also industry representatives, educators and students-all dedicated, in one way or another, to interior design. With a membership greater than 38,000, the organization has 48 chapters throughout the United States and Canada, including one here in Seattle. Look for the “find a designer” feature on the asidwashingtonstate.org. website.

National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA)
With more than 25,000 members nationwide, this nonprofit trade organization provides resources for consumers and industry professionals alike. NKBA hosts an impressive industry trade show each year and offers ongoing educational programs. Additionally, the association monitors legislation pertaining to the industry.

International Interior Design Association
Founded in 1994, IIDA is a professional networking and educational association with more than 10,000 members and more than 240 of those in the Northern Pacific chapter. Committed to excellence in the field of interior design, IIDA provides industry information, maintains educational standards and translates trends. Check the iida-wa.org. website for event listings as well as news and articles pertinent to interior design and IIDA.

Northwest Society of Interior Designers
A regional organization of design professionals, NWSID is dedicated to promoting excellence through career development, networking, continuing education and a regard for the highest ethical standards.

American Society of Landscape Architects
Now 107 years old, ASLA represents more than 16,000 landscape architects through 48 chapters. The society works to forward the profession and practice of landscape architecture through advocacy, education, communication and fellowship, and actively advocates locally, statewide and nationally regarding issues such as livable communities, surface transportation, historic preservation and the environment. It also promotes awareness and understanding of landscape architecture.

Washington Association of Landscape Professionals
WALP was founded in 1984 to develop professionalism and educational programs and to affect legislation concerning the landscape industry. Members represent everything from irrigation and maintenance to design. The association publishes Northwest Landscape Professional magazine and hosts educational seminars as well as an annual conference and award program.

Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association
Formed in 1937, WSNLA represents all facets of the “green industry” with membership including grower and retail nurseries, landscape services (design through maintenance), educators, students, garden writers and individual professionals within the industry.
